Animal-Based Foods And Acne

mTORC1 is activated by amino acids like leucine, which is present in high amounts in meat products like chicken and beef. It is also abundantly found in proteins like soy, whey, and egg that are popular with vegetarians. High amounts of leucine in our body can overstimulate mTORC1. Overstimulation of the mTORC1 pathway will affect the growth of skin cells, production of sebum, and inflammation. Besides, sebaceous glands take leucine as their raw material for producing sebum. This ultimately results in the production of acne.
The overstimulation of mTORC1 can also elevate the level of androgen hormones that play a significant role in the formation of acne. The mTORC1 pathway is a complex one and more research is necessary to fully establish that consumption of meat products can lead to acne breakouts.
Going Plant-Based To Control Acne
Vegetarians and vegans do not eat meat. However, vegans abstain from eating all food items that come from animals. This includes dairy products, eggs, and even honey. Some of the studies suggest that dairy items can worsen the acne condition. Just like meat products, dairy items are high in leucine. Moreover, the hormones present in meat also has a role to play in acne breakouts.
Consumption of dairy items has not been proved to cause acne in people who have normal and clear skin. Rather, it can worsen existing breakouts in people. Other food items like eggs, honey, and lard have not been shown to influence the development of acne, or these food items have not been studied. Reducing the consumption of dairy items can decrease the chances of acne breakouts. However, having a completely plant-based meal is not necessary in any case.
